Abstract:

MARPOL (an abbreviation for marine pollution) is an international agreement to reduce marine pollution globally. It is comprised of five annexes, and the purpose of Annex V is to reduce plastic and garbage pollution of the marine environment from vessels of any size, including recreational boats. A case study was conducted at Nantucket Boat Basin to determine the solid wastes generated by recreational boaters and their impact on plastic conntamination of the marine environment as regulated by MARPOL, Annex V. From the information gathered in this study, a planning model was developed to assist harbors and ports in complying with the requirements of MARPOL Annex V in managing garbage and plastic wastes generated by recreational boaters.
