Abstract:

The number of so-called marinas and yacht harbours in Japan is said to be as many as 1,000 at present. In this report, the findings of a survey on 365 marinas which appear to satisfy the criteria for a marina set by the Ministry of Transport and which are members of the Marina Beach Association are discussed. The subject items of the survey conducted in 1990 were the year of opening, administrative body, management body, yacht accommodation capacity, number of registered boats, surrounding environment, auxiliary facilities, administrative and management conditions, level of boating activities, marina management problems and problems vis-a-vis neighbouring communities. These subject items were examined for each of 7 sea areas and 1 inland water area, the classifications of which was based on the meteorological conditions of the respective locations of these marinas, and their characteristics as well as specific problems were identified.
