This paper is being presented by the Division of Structures, Post EarthQuake Investigation Team (PEQIT) on the collapse of the Cypress Street Viaduct in the City of Oakland, California, as a result of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake. It will briefly discuss the design criteria, pioneering characteristics of the design, construction techniques, and the lifeline importance of the structure. Discussion will highlight the structural components, foundations, geotechnical features, and the subsequent seismic retrofit of the structure.
