Abstract:

A new fluorescence technique which measures the concentration profile in a mass transfer boundary layer is described. It uses a tracer whose fluorescent intensity is inversely proportional to oxygen concentration. The fluorescence of the tracer is recorded using a CCD camera so that spatial resolution is preserved. Preliminary experiments give the change in the concentration profile as oxygen diffuses into water. Comparison with calculated mass transfer rates verifies that the technique accurately measures the spatial variation of oxygen in a direction normal to the boundary.
