Dealing with Construction People (The People Side of Construction Profits)

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Preparing for Construction in the 21st Century

Abstract:

The people side of producing construction job profits is usually tied to quantitative measures of craft productivity, morale and quests for quality. At the same time that people usually represent the highest single cost figure, they are also considered the most unpredictable, difficult to control and by far the one critical factor that nothing much can be done about. Much of the industry has turned its energies to solving more technical issues, and turned away dealing with human factors as a primary target for profit improvement. This paper takes another view of the people equation and suggests ways in which the engineering and construction communities can adopt new ways of obtaining profits by changing how they put together the people side of projects. Portions of the background for this paper are based on research by the author for the Construction Industry Institute (CII) Project Organization Task Force.
