Abstract:

A case history is used to examine the planning, design, and installation of a temporary traffic deck over a 23-foot-deep braced excavation. The deck was installed in a three-phase sequence to allow traffic to continue on a major city roadway during excavation and the nine-month construction period. The temporary roadway deck consisted of 2000 square feet of timber decking supported by steel girders. The temporary traffic deck system is evaluated in terms of performance, constructability, and safety.
