Temporary Lateral Support System for Historic Building Facades in Boston

by Robert L. Zupcak, Bergmann Associates, Rochester, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Preparing for Construction in the 21st Century

Abstract:

This paper describes a system of vertically cantilevered structural steel trusses, designed by the author, that provided temporary lateral support for a group of five and six story, 120 year old brick, stone, and cast iron building facades. The remainder of the building's structural components were demolished, and the facades restored and incorporated into the new exterior skin of a 24 story office tower.
