Abstract:

Temporary Structures in Construction Projects (TSC) are utilized for three (3) purposes A. Support (of the structure being built or adjacent structures or utilities) B. Protection (of workmen, the public and adjacent facilities) C. Access (to the site of the work for workmen, equipment and materials) Within this definition can be included work ranging from the laying of plank to protect a pavement to permit crossing by tracked equipment and the design and construction of a massive cofferdam with extensive structural steel and pile reinforcing, pumps and dewatering equipment. In some projects, the TSC may be the major element of cost. This paper considers those TSC that provide Access to a structure during construction and further provide Protection and or Support, including: 1. Scaffolding 2. Sidewalk Sheds and Building Perimeter Protection 3. Roadways, Ramps and Bridges 4. Personnel and Materials Hoists Cofferdams, support of excavations, and shoring of concrete forms and falsework, all meeting the above criteria, are not discussed as they are treated extensively elsewhere.
