Abstract:

Two-dimensional fluidization experiments are performed on fine (d50 = 0.15 mm) and medium coarse (d50 = 0.45 mm) sands at bed depths of both 25.4 cm and 42.0 cm. Four supply pipe configurations are tested, employing symmetrically and horizontally opposed 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) diameter orifices with spacings of 2.54 cm (1 inch), 5.08 cm (2 inch), 7.62 (3 inch), and 10.16 (4 inch) on center. The excess hydraulic head distribution, supply pipe head, and flow rate are monitored during prefluidization conditions. During initial fluidization, full fluidization, and slurry removal conditions the fluidized zone geometry is also monitored. The effect of orifice spacing is discussed, and a 5.08 cm (2 inch) hole spacing for the fine sand and a 2.54 cm (1 inch) spacing for the medium coarse sand are recommended for design.
