Abstract:

Measurements of sediment transport on the Nile River were conducted at Bani Mazar (200 km South of Cairo) during high and low water stages. Bed-load and suspended-load transport rates were measured at five locations in one cross section. Also the bed material was sampled and bed form tracking was performed. The bed-load and suspended-load transport rates were calculated based on the measurements carried out with the Helley-Smith and Delft Hydraulics pump sampler, respectively. The sediment transport rates were also estimated according to different transport prediction formulae. The measured suspended sediment concentrations were very low (maximum of 180 mg/L). In fact, the Nile River transport in Egypt, has become very small after the construction of the High Aswan Dam. The measured bed-load transport was uncertain as the calibration factor is not known, particularly for sand-bed rivers with very low transport. The most commonly relations have not been developed for the hydraulic and sediment conditions that exist presently in the Nile River.
