Abstract:

A three-dimensional, particle tracking scheme is used to compute the trajectory of and spread about the centroid of a mass slug added to steady flow through an infinite aquifer with an ellipsoidal region (heterogeneity), having a hydraulic conductivity different from the aquifer. Particles are moved and mixed using local velocity and dispersion values. The effects of heterogeneity, hydraulic conductivity (relative to the aquifer), size and position (relative to the source) and of plume density on the slug trajectory and spread are investigated and compared with a slug in a homogeneous aquifer.
