Abstract:

Two types of numerical simulation approach are usually applied when simulating density-stratified flow in aquifers: (a) the sharp interface approach, and (b) the coupling of flow transport approach. In the present study we consider the application of a third approach termed 'the multiphase flow approach'. According to this approach, it is assumed that the density-stratified aquifer can be divided into several regions. Each one of these regions is occupied by a different immiscible fluid. However, no sharp interface exists between adjacent regions. The results obtained in the present study showed that the new approach can be applied in many cases where previously mentioned approaches failed.
