Groundwater Management in the Main Aquifer of High Aswaan Dam

Abstract:

The High Aswaan Dam reservoir replenishes a groundwater aquifer which extends on both sides of the dam lake with variable thickness. The groundwater of this aquifer is used to irrigate the reclaimed areas around the reservoir of the dam during the low water level period. Surface water is used to irrigate those areas only when the high reservoir water levels are reached. A conjunctive use procedure is planned in this respect. In order to arrange for a water management plan and study, the interaction between the surface water in the reservoir and the groundwater models was prepared. An unsteady state model was set to study the groundwater potential for several years, whereas a steady state model was prepared to find the safe yield of the aquifer, upon which a safe groundwater management plan was adopted.
