Abstract:

The collapsible gate on the Wausau Dam is unique; there is only one known that is similar in design. The collapsible gate, which looks like an inverted V, was designed by Mead and Hunt to lengthen and improve Wausau's whitewater canoe-kayak course on the Wisconsin River. The Wausau course, a world class course, is also unique since it is one of only two urban sites in North America for whitewater racing. The collapsible gate, which replaced a tainter gate, allows the race course to continue with the starting gate upstream and improves the ability to adjust and control water flow. The new gate is able to release the appropriate amount of water to improve all levels of competition through the canoe and kayak race course downstream of the gate. This paper discusses the technical aspects of the collapsible gate, how it was designed and how the gate improved the recreational activities on the river.
