Abstract:

The agencies responsible for the Central and West Coast Basins of Los Angeles County, California have managed their ground water supplies by the artificial recharge of reclaimed and imported water since the 1950's. The successful ground water management plan demonstrates a variety of recharge methods, cooperation of water agencies, and integration of a number of water supplies to allow for optimum use of the basins as a conduit and a supply. Management goals are to provide high quality ground water, maximize flow from recharge areas to production areas, maintain seawater intrusion barriers, and maintain water reserves at optimum amounts. Under normal operations, local supplies are supplemented with imported and reclaimed water. Recharge into the ground water is accomplished by injection wells, in-lieu programs, and percolation from spreading basins and river channels.
