Abstract:

Definitive proof of the phenomenon of concurrent biological nitrification-denitrification in activated sludge is presented. The mechanism appears to be an inhibition of oxygen respiration in the presence of nitrite. Due to the inhibition the biomass uses NOx as an electron acceptor even in the presence of high D.O.
