Abstract:

An analysis and understanding of morphodynamic and littoral processes along a coastal shoreline is important in design of a beach fill project. Morphodynamic analysis should include a review of historic shoreline changes in the project area and nearshore bathymetric characteristics which may influence the project behavior. Littoral processes considerations should include determination of the local wave climate and longshore sediment transport patterns in the area. A completed beach fill project along portions of the Atlantic coast of Key Biscayne is being monitored through a series of beach and nearshore surveys and aerial photography. An analysis of littoral processes affecting the beach fill project included application of a shoreline change model. Initial fill performance and potential long-term fill response is presented.
