Sediment Yield Location Maps

Abstract:

The West National Technical Center of the Soil Conservation Service is compiling a series of colored sediment yield location maps for the eleven western United States, as well as Alaska and Hawaii. These maps show the locations of pond and reservoir sites where data on sediment yield has been collected. These maps also show the locations of stream gage measuring stations where suspended load and/or bed load has been measured. The site names, years of record, location by latitude and longitude, Hydrologic Unit Area, and Major Landl Resource Area, are shown on the back of the map. The presence or absence of data in specific geographic areas, can be quickly determined from these maps. These maps are being digitized utilizing the Geographical Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS), so that sediment yield attribute data can be input and manipulated for each site location on the map. There is a significant need for sediment data because sediment volume and sediment quality create land problems, conveyance and storage capacity problems, and water quality problems. In addition, river sediment contributions to littoral drift are an important component of the near shore sand budget.
