Abstract:

A three-dimensional finite difference model has been developed for the numerical simulation of the physical process of horizontal and vertical convection, horizontal and vertical diffusion and gravitational settling of the sediment particles carried in suspension by the action of currents. Knowledge of the sediment concentration field can lead to a first estimate of the initial bed level changes to be induced in a coastal area by these currents and this is of great practical importance. The numerical model is validated by comparing its results with known analytical solutions and by applying it in a case of practical civil engineering interest.
