Mitigation for Offshore Development/Fishing Conflicts

Abstract:

Three case studies, WestGold gold dredging offshore Nome, Alaska, Endicott Causeway off Alaska's North Slope, and Platform Irene offshore California, show that project related impacts on fisheries are largely unknown. Also, success of mitigation in addressing the impacts varies depending on the level of knowledge and cooperation by interested parties. The studies also support the contention that first and foremost, clear policy directives from policy makers regarding the need for and acceptability of offshore oil production and mining is imperative for orderly coastal development and balancing of competing uses.
