What Future for Phuket?

Abstract:

Phuket Island is a key demonstration site for formulating Thailand's coastal resources policies. In its first two years in Phuket, reported at CZ89, the Thailand Coastal Resources Management Project defined the island's resource management issues and problems, and assessed the laws and resources available to address them. The present report briefly summarizes two additional years of work in Phuket, as well as the translation of that work into recommendations for national policy to correct local environmental problems, including water pollution, loss of natural forests and wetlands, loss of scenic qualities, degraded coral reefs, congestion, flooding, and erosion. Citizen involvement, working with officials at the local, provincial, and national levels has been crucial to developing proposals for realistic actions to protect the long-range future of Phuket and other coastal areas.
