Abstract:

Rock slopes along transportation routes can fail in several different modes, with various types and magnitudes of consequences. The 'risks' associated with such rock slope failures can be managed in a variety of ways, with varying effectiveness. Proactive, rather than reactive, approaches are often most effective. A methodology has been developed specifically to optimize such preventative maintenance activities for rock slopes, both for individual slopes and for sets of slopes, considering tradeoffs among implementation costs and consequences, as well as any constraints. This methodology is explicit and quantitative, as well as comprehensive, and is based on sound decision analysis techniques incorporating probabilistic risk assessments. The methodology is presented and its application demonstrated by way of examples.
