Abstract:

Adhesion of biological cells plays an important role in many physiological processes. For instance, the adhesion of killer T-lymphocyte to its target cell is an essential step in cytolysis, red blood cell adhesion leads to rouleau formation, and cell adhesion is a prime function of platelets. In the present work, we develop a model based on the contact mechanics of viscoelastic bodies and a thermodynamics analysis which allows derivation of the relations of the macroscopic quantities to the molecular properties.
