A Logical Variable Approach to Water Supply Reliability

Abstract:

The calculation of the reliability that water will be available at a demand point in a distribution network is complicated by the redundancy of paths from the source to the point. The use of Boolean algebra to identify the qualifying sets of paths whose reliabilities need to be calculated is examined. With this logical variable approach, the reliability of capacitated networks may be examined. The procedure is applied to a moderately sized system to demonstrate the difference between reliability values obtained when capacity constraints are taken into account and those where only connectivity is considered.
