Abstract:

The radiological capacity of spent fuel storage and transport casks can be increased by the use of non-uniform cask loading. There are many possible combinations of spent fuel burnup and age that can be accommodated when a given cask is non-uniformly loaded. A method for determining acceptable burnup/age combinations in non-uniformly loaded casks is described. The use of that method is illustrated by showing the burnup/age combinations that can be loaded into each of the regions in a 2-region non-uniform cask loading pattern.
