Abstract: Lloyd Aldrich, the son of Orrin Percey and Emma (Pearce) Aldrich, was born July 1, 1886, at Marion, KS. He was graduated from the University of Illinois (Urbana) with a degree in civil engineering.
He became a resident of Los Angeles in 1915, did county engineering for several California counties; consulting work for oil companies, government agencies; and irrigation districts; and was a director for the California Bridge & Tunnel Co., which constructed the "Posey Tube", subaqueous vehicular tunnel under Alameda Estuary in San Francisco Bay. He was made City Engineer of the City of Los Angeles in 1933 and remained in that position until retirement in 1955. During his term as City Engineer, he directed design and construction of the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant, which was recognized by ASCE as one of the seven Engineering Wonders of the United States. It is calculated that he had a hand in constructing more than a billion dollars worth of public works during his incumbency.
Mr. Aldrich was a member of the Los Angeles Section of the Society. In addition he had been a member of the National Highway Research Board; American Public Works Association; California Sewage and Industrial Wastes Association; Los Angeles Metropolitan Traffic Association; and president of the County Engineers Association of California, and the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Engineering Board; as well as being an active member of innumerable committees and groups related to various facets of the freeway program.
Mr. Aldrich married Agnes West on June 22, 1940. Mr. Aldrich died July 22, 1967, and is survived by his widow; six children; and numerous grandchildren.
Mr. Aldrich was elected a Member on March 7, 1921, and a Fellow on June 6, 1959. He became a Life Member in 1956.
