Abstract:

The OECD/NEA programme in the radioactive waste management area gives a high priority to long-term safety aspects of radioactive waste disposal practices. Overall aims of this part of the programme are to assist in the development of methods and tools of high quality for the assessment of the safety of radioactive waste repositories and to promote a balanced and coherent use of these methodologies within radioactive waste disposal programmes. This paper provides a brief introduction to the NEA activities in this area. It presents the main conclusions of a recent review of safety assessment methods. Two topics are discussed in more detail: the application of radiation protection and safety criteria for radioactive waste disposal and the issue of human intrusion at waste disposal sites.
