Abstract:

Commercial and industrial development around existing power plant waste disposal sites often precludes the ability to expand these sites laterally. Limitations on land availability have forced power companies to examine non-routine methods of disposal. Hydraulic filling is one technique that can be used to increase disposal capacity by building on top of existing power plant waste disposal sites. This paper presents a case history of a disposal facility that is being built by hydraulic filling. An additional 20 years of disposal capacity will be provided by raising the crest elevation of an existing earth fill dike using bottom ash to contain fly ash that is generated. The bottom ash is separated at the end of a sluice line by natural segregation and is then used as borrow to raise the crest elevation of the dike in stages. A key component of the facility is an extensive internal drainage system.
