Abstract:

In order to establish the required depth of augered caisson-type footings in cold regions and their optimal design against adfreeze heaving, an experimental field investigation has been conducted at two test sites near Quebec City, both having highly frost-susceptible soils. Thirteen cylindrical reinforced-concrete footings with different depths and design features (with and without surface thermal insulation, with and without protective tube) were built and their behavior was monitored throughout the last two winters.
