Abstract:

To comply with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requirements with regard to stability under a postulated Probable Maximum Flood, an extensive foundation investigation and stability analysis of West Virginia's Lake Lynn Dam was conducted from 1982 to 1989. The authors describe the investigation and the recommended remedial measures. These included improvements to the dam's foundation drainage system and the installation of 75 post-tensioned tendons, or rock anchors, on the east bulkhead, spillway and west bulkhead sections. The foundation drainage system improvements, including cleaning of the existing system and the installation of 46 foundation drains, resulting in 84 functioning foundation drains at the dam, was completed in November 1989. The installation of the rock anchors, including a 58 strand, 2,040 kips anchor that is the largest ever assembled in North America, will be finished by December 1990. In all, the remedial measures will almost double the dam's design flood capacity.
