Field Installation of Strain Gaged Geotextiles

Abstract:

High-strength polyester geotextiles were used in two major Corps of Engineers projects: Wilmington Harbor, Del. and New Bedford, Mass. To verify design assumptions and as part of monitoring the construction and dike performance after construction, strain gages were attached to the geotextiles. This paper describes the procedure in which the strain gages were attached, their calibration, and read-out technique. Also explained is the installation method used to protect the strain gages from water and backfill material. A brief description of the placement of the strain gaged geotextile sheet at each site is provided.
