Abstract:

This paper presents a summary of the principles of methods to observe the detailed patterns of local deformation within a soil mass: stereophotogrammetry, polaroscopy, infrared tomography and radiography and discusses their respective ranges of applicability. Then, the development of x-ray imaging techniques in soil mechanics over the last twenty years is reviewed and the application of such techniques to the mechanics of particulate media is described. It is shown that this approach can provide accurate information on the field of internal displacement within cohesionless soil models or specimens. Strain fields and spatial variations of the state of compaction can be derived using x-ray image processing methods. The advantages of the method over other techniques, as well as its limitations, are discussed.
