Mechanical Aspects of Intake Gates at John Hart Dam

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

As part of the John Hart Dam rehabilitation program completed in 1988, six new intake gates complete with guides and hydraulic operators were installed replacing the existing gates and hoists. The new gates have the ability to automatically close after an earthquake and have been designed to withstand a Maximum Credible Earthquake (MCE). Seismic triggers, located within the immediate area of the dam, detect earthquake ground motions and initiate gate closing using pressurized oil stored in the gate hydraulic system accumulators.
