Abstract:

Geomorphic observations, sediment data and shear stress analyses were integrated to evaluate the potential responses of the steep, coarse grained Truckee River to a proposed flood control project in Reno, NV. Bed material gradations and shear stress analyses indicated that particle motion is initiated at a minimum dimensionless critical shear stress (F) of 0.01. Large boulders derived from glacial outwash deposits are immobile at the design flood event of 18,500 cfs. The frequency of mobilization of the D84 size of the active riffles was related to the geomorphic characteristics of field identified subreaches. Where the D84 grain size is mobile for over 50 percent of the time, bars are absent; where the D84 is mobile for about 35 percent of the time, in-phase bank attached point bars are present. Where the D84 is mobile less than 5 percent of the time, the channel contains out-of-phase bank attached and mid-channel bars.
