The Calculation of Flushing Flows for Gravel and Cobble Bed Rivers

Abstract:

Flushing flows are needed to remove fines and sand from a gravel or cobble bed river. A natural stream will have periodic high flows adequate for flushing of fines and sand, but the hydraulic works of man often reduce the flows below those needed. Analytical techniques are available to determine the flushing flow needed in a regulated stream based on the size of the bed surface material and the material to be remove. The analysis can be made using average cross-sectional properties, or the joint distribution of the habitat needs and the flushing flow requirements.
