Abstract:

The behavior of thermal plumes from staged multiport diffusers was investigated experimentally. The three-dimensional temperature distribution was measured by scanning thermistor rakes across the plumes. Experimental observations supported the hypothesis of a near field dominated by momentum jet mixing, and an intermediate field dominated initially by turbulent mixing and eventually by gravitational spreading. By coupling dimensional analysis with experimental results, empirical relationships were established to give first approximations relating the mean characteristics of the plume to the governing parameters.
