Harvest of Ephemeral Runoff for Artificial Groundwater Recharge in Arid Basin Water Management

by G. F. Cochran, Univ of Nevada System, Reno, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulics/Hydrology of Arid Lands (H?AL)

Abstract:

Harvest of springtime flow to a playa in Lemmon Valley, north of Reno, was evaluated as a means of increasing local groundwater supplies through artificial recharge. Surface water and groundwater studies in the donor area estimated the long-term harvestable volumes. Hydrogeologic and geochemical models of the receiving area were used to determine the effects of artificial recharge. Costs for the harvest/recharge program were estimated to compare favorably with alternative water supply solutions.
