Abstract:

The Orange County Water District is investigating the reasons why percolation rates in deep recharge basins rapidly decrease. The interrelationship between microbiological activities in the benthic zone of the basins and silt settling from the influent water is being researched. Micro organisms, such as diatoms, produce biopolymers which create silt traps between sand grains. The District is also experimenting with methods to control and remove silt from influent water prior to its entry into the deep recharge basins.
