Abstract:

Economic losses resulting from increases in salinity in the Colorado River system were estimated to be $311 million annually in 1986. As a result of protests by Mexico to the United States in 1961, a sequence of international agreements were reached to implement certain measures to alleviate the rising salinity levels in the Colorado River system. Several laws (Public Laws 93-320, 92-500, and 98-569) mandated the establishment of water quality standards on the river together with a program to achieve those standards. A program to comply with the standards was developed through the integrated effort of various State and Federal entities.
