Abstract:

Operation of the canal headworks has proven to be detrimental to migrating fish passing the Red Bluff Diversion Dam. Studies performed for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation were undertaken to analyze a variety of engineering and biologic problems associated with the canal headworks and the existing louvered fish diverter. Construction of a new fish bypass facility at the headworks isolated the canal from the river while safeguarding the important fishery resources. The paper presents a background of fishery problems at Red Bluff Diversion Dam and at the Tehama-Colusa Canal headworks. It also discusses the biological based design and operational considerations along with a report on the progress of the construction activities.
