Abstract:

The ARC/INFO geographic information system (GIS) has been combined with the ARX spatial expert system and the SMSP soil moisture-soil strength model to assist the managers of a major training base for the Australian Army by providing predictions of likely damage and cost of repair from individual exercises. ARX is used to predict the soil type and wetness index across the base. These results and antecedent rainfall are then used to predict the soil moisture and soil strength of parts of the base booked for training exercises. ARC/INFO is used to map the results.
