Abstract:

Hydroelectric projects with storage have the characteristic of being able to generate electricity with short notice and to stop generating electricity with equally short notice. This peaking mode of energy generation typically leads to rapid changes in streamflow downstream of the project. An analytical tool developed to look at the aquatic habitat associated with these rapid changes is based on the minimum habitat associated with the two flows forming the generation cycle. The results of this dual-flow analysis can then be used to select acceptable combinations of base and generation flows.
