Abstract:

Integration of an ARC/INFO geographic information system (GIS) with hydrodynamic water quality models (HEC-1 and HEC-5Q) helps quantify the water quality impacts of urban storm water runoff. The system can identify municipal outfalls affecting surface water quality, classify watersheds based on sensitivity to storm water inputs, and assist the local community in meeting EPA proposed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit requirements for storm water discharges. Application of this integrated system provides an effective, affordable planning tool for cities interested in assessing the impacts of storm water problems and proposed mitigation projects.
