Cost-Effective Maintenance and Replacement Scheduling

by Jay R. Lund, Univ of California, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Water Resources Infrastructure: Needs, Economics, and Financing

Abstract:

The paper discusses operations research approaches to scheduling maintenance on components of water resources infrastructure. Cost and reliability objectives are explicitly considered. The paper discusses a variety of methods developed in other fields for scheduling maintenance and discusses their applicability to scheduling maintenance for contemporary water resource systems. Examples are drawn from municipal water supply maintenance and maintenance dredging of navigational channels. These methods promise to improve abilities to cost-effectively schedule maintenance and improve our abilities to evaluate the financial impact of proposed rehabilitation technologies.
