DYCAM: A Computer Aided Engineering Tool for Space Construction Planning

Abstract:

Planning and management of construction activities in space have not received sufficient attention up to the present. Space Station Freedom, a number of large platforms and extraterrestrial bases currently on the drawing board require that a more focused research effort be directed at this novel type of space activity. A computing environment is needed which can provide assurance that space vehicles, platforms and extraterrestrial bases are, at all times during construction, viable systems with regard to structural and environmental stability, including life support in the case of manned operations. The Dynamic Construction and Assembly Module (DYCAM) described herein is intended to relate the configuration database of a specific mission to the mission's construction and operation plans in order to determine the stability of the system at a fine-grained set of node points, and to suggest corrective measures to ensure the survivability of the system if failures cause it to deviate from acceptable levels of safety and/or operability.
