Abstract:

The Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board is a new independent governmental establishment with in the Executive Branch created in December 1987 when Congress enacted the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act. The functions of the Board are to include an evaluation of the technical and scientific validity of the activities undertaken by the Secretary of Energy after the date of enactment, including (1) site characterization, and (2) packaging and transportation of high-level radioactive waste or spent nuclear fuel. The Board has held four meeting since its first meeting in March 1989 and has held seven Panel meetings. Its first report to Congress and to the Secretary of Energy was in January 1990.
