Abstract:

The storage of high level nuclear waste in an underground repository presents engineering problems in ventilation, construction methods and plan, and in proposed retrievability. Temperatures from stored nuclear materials rise rapidly during emplacement, forcing rapid excavation methods and very high repository ventilation rates. Continued heating brings temperatures over boiling after 50 or 100 years of storage. Radically different repository concepts are suggested to replace current design.
