Abstract:

Reprocessing highly enriched uranium fuel from UKAEA Materials Testing Reactors produces highly active aqueous raffinate. This is currently stored. The UK strategy is for raffinate immobilisation, interim storage and deep underground disposal. The most viable immobilisation route, cementation, has been developed for the Dounreay Cementation Plant, DCP, and the process optimised, generally with simulants, supported by confirmational studies with real waste. The active studies have shown suitable conditioning behaviour, physical and radiation stability and leaching resistance for both active and inactive components. In addition, the Dounreay Cementation Plant has provision to immobilise highly active solid wastes whilst cementation of raffinates from Dounreay Fast Reactor operations is being investigated.
