Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for the eventual disposal in a repository of spent fuels, high-level waste, and other radioactive wastes that may require long-term isolation. This includes LWR spent fuel and immobilized HLW as the two major sources, plus other forms including non-LWR spent fuels and miscellaneous sources (such as activated metals in the Greater-than-Class-C category). The Characteristics Data Base, sponsored by DOE's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, was created to systematically tabulate the technical characteristics of these materials. The data fields include (a) physical descriptions, (b) chemical compositions, (c) radionuclide compositions and derived properties such as curies, watts, and neutron emissions, all decayed over time, (d) existing inventories, and (e) projected quantities.
