Abstract:

TVO's site programme aims at selection of a repository site for spent fuel by the end of 2000. A repository is planned to be constructed in the 2010's and commissioned by the year 2020. The objectives and schedules of the site selection programme are set forth in the policy decision of the Government in 1983. TVO selected in April 1987 five areas for site investigations. Their suitability for final disposal of spent fuel will be preliminary evaluated in 1992, after which 2-3 most suitable sites will be investigated and assessed in detail during 1993-2000. Field investigation have been carried out on five areas since 1987. Most of the field work has been completed. Modelling and evaluation of areas is in progress. The results achieved have been concordant with the predictions made in earlier phase when potential candidates were selected. Public is informed of the site investigations and the waste management programme both directly and through media.
